Rick just how old are you dude? Sinatra, Bennet, Garland! What about Bing Crosby and Rudy Valle? I bet you think that the foxtrot is cool. I am sorry man. But if your younger than 60 and you believe that the rat pack is hip, you've got to be a Republican.
There are a lot of contemporary artists with more talent than Jackson. My point was to highlight artists who could sing and dance better than he could. An incomplete list to be sure and dominated by giants whose contributions to the American songbook will still be acknowledged 100 years from now where Michael Jackson will be a pleasant memory in the minds of his fans during their lifetimes only. This is the difference between Jackson and anyone on my list (Merman, Peters, and Tunes are legends on Broadway - Merman has been dead for decades and she is still recalled with awe.)
Jackson had presence (which I suppose is a talent of sorts), a marvelous flair for the dramatic - both on and off stage - and recognized trends in pop and the industry before they became popular; a sure sign of genius - in marketing. But as I've been trying to make the point - beyond the pedophilia - the scales do not balance. On one side, you have the real Michael Jackson of limited talent and historical impact. On the other side, you have this gargantuan coverage - wall to wall cable news, specials on The Big Three networks, millions of words written in respectable, supposedly non-tabloid media. There is a disconnect that just doesn't add up.
